Île de Ré, France
The Île de Ré is a small island off the west coast of France. Across the water from the ancient city of La Rochelle, the Île de Ré has a long and varied history. Over the centuries it has changed hands between the French and the British, and hosted a fair few battles of its own. Nowadays, it’s a peaceful, charming Atlantic location, filled with oyster sellers and shell-encrusted beaches.
Digging for local ingredients
The sandy soil of the Île de Ré produces a variety of potato called Alcmaria, famous for its delicious flavour. Rétha creators Jérôme and Morgan turned to this local ingredient to pay homage to the Île de Ré. Using fresh Alcmaria potatoes as a base for distillation, they only produce Rétha Vodka la Blanche in the springtime when the potatoes are newly harvested. This ensures that the potatoes retain all of their character and freshness, giving a gorgeously evocative array of local flavour notes to the final distilled product.
Separate distillation to balance the flavour palate
First macerated, then double-distilled with wheat and potato alcohol, the Alcmaria potato variety proves itself a highly successful base for vodka. It gives an astonishing array of flavours to the spirit, from sweet notes to nut tones, along with a smooth, fatty texture. Locally prized for its delicious flavours, when bottled it remains instantly recognisable. This vodka paints a lively portrait of the character of life on the Île de Ré.
The Brains Behind It
Searching for luxury
Rétha was created by local Île de Ré distillers Jérôme and Morgan, in a bid to pay homage to this lovely island. Their spirits are produced in a nearby microdistillery, just over the water in mainland Charentes. By using fresh, local ingredients, and paying careful attention to the precise blending process, they have successfully managed to capture the unique personality and charm of the Île de Ré and the surrounding Atlantic Ocean.More on the Brand
